Large Openings: Creating Brighter, More Open Spaces at Home

If you have ever stood in your kitchen or living room and felt like the space could use more light or better flow, large openings are worth considering. Many homeowners come to us with the same goal. They want their home to feel more open, more connected to the outdoors, and easier to use day to day.
Large opening door systems make that possible by replacing a traditional wall or patio door with multiple glass panels that move out of the way. The result is more daylight, clearer views, and a stronger connection between inside and outside spaces.
At GEM Windows & Doors, we design large openings around how you actually live in your home. The right system should feel natural to use, perform well year-round, and suit the style of the house.
What Do We Mean by Large Openings?
Large openings refer to door systems that span wider wall openings than standard patio doors. Instead of one sliding panel, these systems use multiple panels that fold, slide, or stack to create a much larger opening.
Homeowners choose large openings for practical reasons. More light makes rooms feel brighter, especially during the winter months. Wider openings make it easier to move between the house and the backyard. Views become part of the room instead of something you only see through a small window.
Large openings also fit naturally with the way homes are being designed today. Open concept layouts, outdoor living areas, and flexible spaces all benefit from doors that do not limit movement or sightlines. These ideas connect closely with broader renovation patterns we discussed in our Home Improvement Trends for 2026 blog, where openness and indoor-outdoor connection continue to shape how homes are updated.
Understanding Your Options for Large Openings
There is no single solution that works for every home. Layout, wall size, budget, and how often you plan to open the doors all play a role. That is why we offer several large opening systems, each designed to function a little differently.
Bi-Folding Doors
Bi-folding doors are designed to open an entire wall by folding multiple panels to one side or both sides. When open, the panels stack neatly and leave a wide opening with very little obstruction.
Homeowners often choose bi-folding doors when they want the biggest possible opening. These systems work well for entertaining, summer gatherings, or homes where the backyard is used as an extension of the living space.
We offer bi-folding doors in aluminum, aluminum-clad and Canadian-made vinyl. Aluminum bi-folds are thermally broken and designed to handle Canadian weather, while keeping profiles slim, so you see more glass and less frame. Vinyl bi-folding doors have wider and more traditional profiles that match our vinyl window offerings, keeping the aesthetics consistent.
Many bi-folding systems include a swing door, which allows quick access without opening all panels. Panel direction can also be planned around furniture placement and traffic flow, which makes everyday use easier.
Lift and Slide Doors
Lift and slide doors are designed for smooth operation, even at larger sizes. When you turn the handle, the door panel lifts slightly, allowing it to glide open. When closed, it lowers back into place to create a tight seal.
These doors are a good fit if you want large glass panels but prefer a simpler motion compared to folding systems. Lift and slide doors are available in vinyl, aluminum, and aluminum-clad options, with both standard and custom sizes. Some models include integrated screens, which can be helpful if the doors are left open often during warmer months.
Many homeowners choose lift and slide doors because they are easy to operate and maintain a clean, straightforward appearance.
Stacking Doors
Stacking doors create a larger opening than traditional sliding doors by allowing multiple panels to slide and stack behind one another. Instead of folding, the panels move along the track and stack at the ends.
Stacking doors work well in spaces where you want a wide opening but prefer not to have panels folding into the room. These systems are available in aluminum-clad and vinyl and can be designed in standard or custom sizes.
Configured in three and six panel doors. A stacking door is a great alternative to just a sliding door, with material options there is a stacking door that will fit your budget.
Screens for Large Openings
Large openings often require screens that can cover wide spans without being difficult to use. We offer retractable screen systems designed specifically for larger doors.
Our Spartan screen is Canadian sourced and uses a pleated design that moves smoothly and stays where you place it. It does not snap back automatically, which gives you more control. Wizard screens use a clutch locking system that holds the screen in position without retracting into the canister.
Choosing the right screen depends on the door system and how you plan to use the space. We walk through these details with you so the screen works naturally with the door.
Designing a Large Opening That Fits Your Home
Large openings work best when they are planned early and designed with intention. Structural considerations, panel size, material choice, and how the door will be used all matter.
When you work with us, we focus on understanding your space first. We talk through where the opening will be, how often it will be used, and what you want it to feel like when it is open and closed. From there, we help narrow down the systems that make the most sense for your home.
Visiting our showroom can be helpful because you can see how the doors move, feel the materials, and compare configurations in person. Many homeowners find that seeing the systems in action helps them decide what feels right for their space.
Built Around Your Space, Not a Template
Most large openings are custom by nature. Wall sizes vary, ceiling heights differ, and homes have their own character. We design each system around those details rather than trying to force a standard solution.
With options in vinyl, aluminum, and aluminum-clad, we can match large openings to existing windows and doors so the result feels consistent throughout the home. Details like panel layout, hardware finishes, glass type, and screen options are all part of the process.
Each system comes with its own specifications and warranty, and we take time to explain those, so you know exactly what you are getting.
Planning Your Large Opening Project
If you are starting to explore large openings, it is completely normal to have questions. These systems are a big design choice, and taking the time to understand your options is part of the process.
We have been working with homeowners across the Greater Toronto Area since 1961, and our role has always been to guide, not pressure. If you want to talk through an idea, ask about a specific opening, or simply see the products in person, we are here to help.
We encourage you to contact us, and you are also welcome to visit us at 1590 The Queensway, Etobicoke, where you can view large opening systems and speak with our team. When you are ready to move forward, we will help you design a solution that fits your home and how you live in it.
