Security Glass Explained: How Stronger Glass Protects Your Home (and How to Get It Free This August)

Most people think about their windows in terms of light, views, and heating bills. Very few think about what actually happens when something hits the glass.

But that single pane is the thinnest part of your home's exterior. It is the point a storm-driven branch finds first, the point a stray ball finds first, and the point anyone attempting to get inside finds first. Frames, locks, and hardware have all improved dramatically over the past decade. Glass technology has improved just as much, but most homeowners have never been shown the difference.

What Is Security Glass, Exactly?

GEM Security Glass uses laminated glass technology, combining two or more layers of glass bonded together with a durable, transparent interlayer. This construction helps hold the glass together after impact, making it more resistant to forced entry while also improving safety and reducing outside noise.

That interlayer is the whole idea.

When standard glass takes a hard impact, it fails all at once. The pane shatters and the opening is simply gone. When security glass takes that same impact, the outer layer may crack, but the interlayer holds the broken pieces in place. The glass spiderwebs instead of disappearing. The opening stays sealed.

From the street, and from your living room, it looks like ordinary glass. You would not know it was there.

Why That Matters More Than It Sounds

Most break-in attempts through a window are opportunistic and fast. The intruder is counting on one strike to create an opening. When the glass cracks but refuses to give way, that plan falls apart, and it does so loudly, in full view of the neighbours, while the seconds add up.

Security glass does not make a home impenetrable, and nobody should claim otherwise. What it does is remove the easy option. In most cases, that is enough.

The Benefits Go Beyond Break-Ins

Homeowners come to us asking about security. They tend to stay for everything else the upgrade brings with it.

• Quieter interiors. That same laminated interlayer that holds broken glass in place also helps absorb sound vibrations, reducing the amount of outside noise that enters your home.

• UV protection. The laminated interlayer also helps block most UV rays, reducing fading of flooring, furniture, and interior finishes.

• Safer failures. If the glass is ever broken, the fragments stay bonded to the interlayer instead of falling into the room, which is a meaningful advantage in homes with young children or pets.

• Storm and impact resistance. Ontario weather delivers hail, ice, wind-driven debris, and the occasional branch. Multi-layer glass stands up to all of it far better than a single pane.

• Protection while you are away. Cottages, seasonal properties, and homes that sit empty during vacation season benefit the most, because nobody is there to interrupt an attempt in progress.

• No loss of light or view. This is the part that surprises people. Security glass is fully transparent. There are no bars, no films, and no visible reinforcement.

One more point worth making clearly: stronger glass does not mean giving up energy performance. GEM's upgraded glass options can still be paired with Low-E coatings and argon gas fill, so you keep the insulation, the reduced heat transfer, and the year-round comfort you would expect from a modern window.

The Three Levels of GEM Glass

Not every opening in a home needs the same level of protection, which is why GEM offers three tiers rather than a single option.

1. GEM Tempered Glass

   Tempered glass comes standard on every GEM swinging and sliding door, with no upgrade required. It is heat-treated to be up to five times stronger than standard untreated glass while breaking into small, blunt pieces for added safety.

   Best for: standard residential windows and doors where baseline safety is already built in.

2. GEM Security Glass

   The multi-layer option, available on windows and on select door glass configurations as an upgrade. The reinforced interlayer holds the glass together on impact, creating a barrier that slows forced entry rather than yielding to it.

3. GEM Shield Glass

   Best for: cottages, remote properties, and high-priority security areas such as ground-floor openings, basement windows, and doors hidden from street view.

In practice, most homeowners do not upgrade every opening. A common approach is stronger glass on the ground floor, on anything facing a backyard or side alley, and on doors with large glass panels. Those are the openings that are easiest to reach and hardest to see from the street.

Questions We Hear Most Often

1. Is security glass the same as tempered glass? No. Tempered glass is a single heat-treated pane engineered to break safely. Security glass is multiple layers bonded around an interlayer, engineered to stay together and resist entry. Both are stronger than standard glass, but they solve different problems.

2. Does the free upgrade include GEM Shield Glass? No. This offer applies specifically to GEM Security Glass. GEM Shield Glass, our highest tier of protection, is not included and remains available as a separate upgrade for homeowners who want maximum resistance to repeated impact.

3. Will it look different from my other windows? No. Security glass is fully transparent and installs in the same frames. Visitors will not notice it, and neither will you.

4. Does it affect energy efficiency? Not negatively. Upgraded glass can still be paired with Low-E coatings and argon gas fill. The additional layer can also contribute modestly to insulation and noise reduction.
